History

The origins of the parish go back to 1882 when Father Joachim Allard, an Oblate missionary from the Fort Alexander Indian reserve  invited the people from Chateauguay Quebec to come  and establish  a French-Canadian parish on the Winnipeg River in 1882.   It was not until 1903, after the construction of a chapel, that St. Georges officially became  the Saint-Georges de Châteauguay  parish. In 1909, St. Georges built  its first church but  unfortunately it was  destroyed by fire on May 1st, 1929. A second church (still standing) was built on the same spot and opened its doors in the month of December of that same year.

On the occasion of its centenary in 2003, a historical monument was erected near the church to commemorate the work that was accomplished by the founding members of the parish.

Cap Doré  reflects traditional housing designs with all of today’s modern conveniences. This innovative new residential housing development provides the joys of living in a charming riverside village while still only minutes away from every amenity along the Winnipeg River Corridor. We  offer family-friendly shopping, schools, public library, sporting facilities and a regional hospital.

Living in paradise may seem a million miles away but in reality it’s just one hour from the city of Winnipeg. Cap Doré is more than traditional home designs, it is a way of life, Cap Doré truly is paradise found. Nestled along the Winnipeg River, Cap Doré is located in the beautiful and quaint village of Saint-Georges.

Close your eyes, let your mind wander and you can almost feel the gentle river breeze as you sit on your covered porch, immersed in tales of lore from grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Cap Doré Style means simple, natural, and  timeless. From bird-watching and golfing to fishing and sailing you will find an activity to suit your interests.

Saint-Georges Cemetery

In 1998 the St-Georges Cemetery Committee  created the St-Georges Cemetery Foundation with the St-Georges Parish. A long term action plan was developed to address the many problems faced by community parishioners.  A fundraising project was undertaken successfully which  resulted in  a total upgrade of the  site including drainage with a  maintenance and beautification plan.

New cement foundation bases were poured to accommodate the existing and future family  headstones. A survey plan shows all of the rows with numbered lots to assist with the purchase of a lot.

Cemetery lots are available for $300.00 plus  $200.00 for perpetual care maintenance totaling $500.00.  Family lots may also have a maximum of six urns placed for $200.00 each.

You can purchase your lot by writing a cheque to the St-Georges Parish as only paid lots will be reserved. There are regulations concerning the burial of a coffin or urn so please call the St-Georges Parish for more information: 204-367- 2571 or contact the secretary at 204-367-8807

Ecole communautaire Saint-Georges

The first school opened in 1903 in the small chapel was quickly integrated into the life of the small colony. In 1950 it was moved from its picttoresque site on the Winnipeg River to its present site to avoid the flooding of the village caused by MB Hydro’s  Pine Falls Dam. Allard School  continued to flourish as one of the biggest schools in the region. Unfortunately in 1979 the school was closed and students were moved to Powerview School.

The DSFM  re-opened  the school in 1994 in the Community Centre as the first Français Program  School in the region. Today the school can welcome 80 to 120 students from nursery to Grade 12. Multi-level classrooms are the vogue and this uniqueness promotes autonomy, co-operation, and team work within this warm school setting.

The big dream of a  school gymnasium is finally realized in December of 2013 and its inauguration celebrated  by the community at its inauguration as multiple programming is now available to all ages. École Saint-Georges is re-known for its quality of language instruction and its healthy and safe climate.  A day care will be opened in 2016 to complete that quality of life circle that is offered to all of its students.

Also available:

Gymnasium and multi-purpose room for community functions
